Bioactive Bromotyrosine-Derived Alkaloids from the Polynesian Sponge Suberea ianthelliformis ArchiMer
El-demerdash, Amr; Moriou, Celine; Toullec, Jordan; Besson, Marc; Soulet, Stephanie; Schmitt, Nelly; Petek, Sylvain; Lecchini, David; Debitus, Cecile; Al-mourabit, Ali.
Herein, we describe the isolation and spectroscopic identification of eight new tetrabrominated tyrosine alkaloids 2–9 from the Polynesian sponge Suberea ianthelliformis, along with known major compound psammaplysene D (1), N,N-dimethyldibromotyramine, 5-hydroxy xanthenuric acid, and xanthenuric acid. Cytotoxicity and acetylcholinesterase inhibition activities were evaluated for some of the isolated metabolites. They exhibited moderate antiproliferative activity against KB cancer cell lines, but psammaplysene D (1) displayed substantial cytotoxicity as well as acetylcholinesterase inhibition with IC50 values of 0.7 μM and 1.3 μM, respectively.

Effects of local Polynesian plants and algae on growth and expression of two immune-related genes in orbicular batfish (Platax orbicularis) ArchiMer
Reverter, Miriam; Saulnier, Denis; David, Rarahu; Bardon-albaret, Agnes; Belliard, Corinne; Tapissier-bontemps, Nathalie; Lecchini, David; Sasal, Pierre.
The emerging orbicular batfish (Platax orbicularis) aquaculture is the most important fish aquaculture industry in French Polynesia. However, bacterial infections are causing severe mortality episodes. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find an effective management solution. Besides the supplying difficulty and high costs of veterinary drugs in French Polynesia, batfish aquaculture takes place close to the coral reef, where use of synthetic persistent drugs should be restricted. Medicinal plants and bioactive algae are emerging as a cheaper and more sustainable alternative to chemical drugs. We have studied the effect of local Polynesian plants and the local opportunistic algae Asparagopsis taxiformis on batfish when orally administered. Weight gain and...

International workshop on "Different survey methods for coral reef fish, including methods based on underwater video" ArchiMer
Lecchini, David.
In September 2013, staff from the University of the South Pacific (USP) Honiara campus, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and IFREMER (UR LEADNC, AMBIO project) in New Caledonia, and the French Institute for Pacific Coral Reefs (IRCP) in Moorea, French Polynesia, co-facilitated a workshop entitled “Different survey methods of coral reef fish, including the methods based on underwater video”. The workshop was attended by students from USP, NGO and fisheries officers. They were trained to several underwater visual census techniques and to the STAVIRO video-based technique, including both field work and data analysis.

Interplay between hormonal and morphological changes throughout a critical period of larval rearing in the orbicular batfish ArchiMer
Waqalevu, Viliame; Besson, Marc; Gache, Camille; Roux, Natacha; Fogg, Lily; Bertucci, Frédéric; Metian, Marc; Lafille, Marc-andre; Maamaatuaiahutapu, Moana; Gasset, Eric; Saulnier, Denis; Laudet, Vincent; Lecchini, David.
Advancement and diversification of the aquaculture industry is reliant on the development of captive breeding and rearing protocols for novel fish species. Orbicular batfish (Platax orbicularis), a major emerging species in Polynesian aquaculture, live in brackish and marine waters around coral reefs, and are highly prized by Pacific Island communities for their high-quality meat. The present study describes the larval growth of P. orbicularis from hatching until 16 days after hatching (DAH) using meristics and thyroid hormone (T3) quantification. Our study highlighted that metamorphosis of P. orbicularis is critical to their production in aquaculture, as found for other species. Levels of the thyroid hormone T3 in P. orbicularis reached a peak at 12 DAH...

Liste des poissons côtiers de Polynésie française ArchiMer

On the occasion of the 10th Indo-Pacific Fish Conference (http://ipfc10.criobe.pf/) to be held in Tahiti in October 2017, it seemed timely to update Randall's 1985 list of the fishes known from French Polynesia. Many studies focusing on fishes in this area have been published since 1985, but Randall's list remains the authoritative source. Herein we present an expanded species list of 1,301 fishes now known to occur in French Polynesia and we review the expeditions and information sources responsible for the over 60% increase in the number of known species since the publication of Randall's checklist in 1985. Our list of the fishes known from French Polynesia includes only those species with a reliably verifiable presence in these waters. In cases where...

Potential of fascaplysin and palauolide from Fascaplysinopsis cf reticulata to reduce the risk of bacterial infection in fish farming ArchiMer
Mai, Tepoerau; Toullec, Jordan; Van Wynsberge, Simon; Besson, Marc; Soulet, Stephanie; Petek, Sylvain; Aliotti, Emmanuelle; Ekins, Merrick; Hall, Kathryn; Erpenbeck, Dirk; Lecchini, David; Beniddir, Mehdi A.; Saulnier, Denis; Debitus, Cecile.
Marine natural products isolated from the sponge Fascaplysinopsis cf reticulata, in French Polynesia, were investigated as an alternative to antibiotics to control pathogens in aquaculture. The overuse of antibiotics in aquaculture is largely considered to be an environmental pollution, because it supports the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes within the aquatic environment. One environmentally friendly alternative to antibiotics is the use of quorum sensing inhibitors (QSIs). Quorum sensing (QS) is a regulatory mechanism in bacteria which control virulence factors through the secretion of autoinducers (AIs), such as acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) in gram-negative bacteria. Vibrio harveyi QS is controlled through three parallel pathways: HAI-1, AI-2,...
